How to Conceal Your IP While Downloading Torrents

If you are downloading files through a BitTorrent client without doing anything to protect your identity, it’s only a matter of time before you get a letter in the mail saying that you were caught uploading a copyrighted product as a torrent or become the victim a file-sharing lawsuit.

It is a good thing that there are programs that can protect your online identity from the outside world and potentially save you hundreds—maybe even thousands of dollars – in lawsuits. Some of them are free and some of them aren’t, but all of them are effective at concealing your IP.

VPN (Virtual private network)

VPNs, or virtual private networks, allow you to conceal your address and location while using BitTorrent torrents.  For a few bucks a month, VPNs will hide your data and your connections. There are some free virtual private networks as well, but they will most likely give you a much slower downloading experience. StrongVPN, Itshidden and Ipredator are the most popular VPN services, but there are much more of them out there.

Anomos is a file sharing protocol based on the BitTorrent which was modified to offer anonymity. Only the central tracker possesses information about IP addresses, and does not share it with anybody. The good thing about it is that it is free. However, it’s a pity that it is incompatible with regular torrent files and provides lower download speeds.anomosTorrentPrivacy

It is a service that uses a proxy server. Before signing up, you are provided a test to prove that your torrent downloads will be completely anonymous. You won’t need to configure the client, as it has been pre-configured. You will need, however, to pay $10 a month for using this program. Also, only Windows users can use this service so far.

BTGuard is probably the most popular paid service for hiding your online identity while using BitTorrent clients. Very much like TorrentPrivacy, it uses a proxy server to conceal your IP-address from other people. The service works on Windows, Mac and Linux based computers, with virtually any BitTorrent client. The program also offers an encryption solution for total security. As almost all good things, it doesn’t come for free – you will have to pay $7 a month to ensure your anonymity.
